Growth of Digital Cinema

20 Oct 2011

For many Dublin cinema goers, the cinema experience just got a whole lot better. Cineworld Parnell Street is just one of the latest cinemas in Ireland to have upgraded to a fully digital system. The national turnover to top-quality digital cinema is fast gathering pace with many more of the big cinema chains set to switch over to digital before the end of the year.

The reasons behind this phenomenal growth in digital cinema include increased diversity of film product such as 3D films, encouraging greater audiences and a much better quality cinema experience. The benefits for cinema advertisers include reduced production costs and shorter lead in times to get an advert on screen.

39% of all ROI screens are currently digital (172 screens), and Carlton Screen Advertising currently supplies 16 cinemas with fully digital advertising. Fully digital sites include UCI Newbridge, The Swan Cinema Rathmines, Irish Film Centre Dublin, Movies@ Dundrum, Cork Gate Multiplex, Movies@Gorey and now Cineworld.

To help advertisers capitalise on this immense growth CSA have launched an exclusive pre-Christmas digital offer for brands looking to make an impact on shoppers in Quarter 4. When advertisers buy 2 weeks exhibition in the run up to Christmas, they will get an additional week completely free of charge and free production. Upcoming pre-Christmas Winter 2011 blockbusters include Arthur Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Happy Feet 2, Sherlock Holmes 2, Puss In Boots plus many more.

367 films released in 2010 compared to just 185 in 2002, illustrating the immense growth in choice audiences now have across all genres of film. The diversity in film product is further illustrated in the upcoming 2012 film calendar.

All the firm favourites are back including The Amazing Spiderman, Star Trek, Bond 23, The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers, all of which series’ have taken the box office by storm consistently in previous years. The American pie gang will also be back in its entirety in gross-out comedy sequel American Reunion whilst aging, action star Arnold Schwarzenegger has been shafted to make way for Colin Farrell in the re-make of the classic, futuristic flick Total Recall. Family movies returning to the big screen will include Madagascar 3 and Ice Age: Continental Drift.

Promising new 2012 film product comes in the form of The Iron Lady starring Meryl Streep, the first instalment in the best-selling book series The Hunger Games, Sasha Baron Cohen’s latest project The Dictator, Disney’s time travel epic John Carter and the ‘game-turned-movie’ Battleship starring Liam Neeson. Ridley Scott’s latest offering Prometheus will see Michael Fassbender battle to save the future of the human race whilst Tim Burton is set do what he does best in the gothic horror tale Dark Shadows.
